Surgical Fires — Calling Doctor Semmelweis

Dr. Semmelweis is no longer with us, surgical fires are. Laser surgery is at times the source of ignition of fires in operating rooms.  Laser surgery and Dr. Semmelweis’ efforts had and still have similar consequences, good and bad ones.  They save lives, quite a few on account of laser surgery, but vastly more, perhaps as many as or more than half a billion in the case of Dr. Semmelweis’ efforts.  Unfortunately, they also caused and cause injury and death, very rarely in the case of laser surgery, perhaps never in the case of Dr. Semmelweis but once.  What he discovered killed him.  It made him a martyr who died … Continue reading

Falling birth rates cause painful demographic changes

Falling birth rates do not cause a given population to die out 70 years later, despite some people’s insistence that they will do so, but they will – at times noticeably – affect most or even all demographic factors of concern and how they will change (most often to the worse) in the future. Falling birth rates are not necessarily the cause of detrimental demographic consequences, IF they are the consequence of wealth, and IF a nation can afford to live with that consequence.  If a nation cannot afford to live with falling birth rates, low birth rates will be the cause of its demise.   It would be suicidal for that … Continue reading

Parenthood needs a village before becoming inhuman

Last updated 2018 10 23 Parenthood needs a village before becoming inhuman? The competition between nature and nurture may involve expensive, high-end, often extremely expensive technology.  The outcomes are not always viable. The urge to engage in parenthood is a human desire driven by many things: the need for procreation; hormones; ticking biological clocks; social pressure; greed for social status; the need for the intergenerational transfer of wealth, traditions and knowledge; gender activism, and by much more.  Life is short.  It was extremely short for Huxley. Every morning Ruth checks the obituaries, to see whether some of the deceased mentioned in them are known to us. This morning she pointed … Continue reading

Naming Mountains and Ideologies — the Real and the Ideal

Mountains and ideologies are named by people who think they rule, occupy, own or were victorious over them. Ownership changes, as do the names. Love is an ideal thing, marriage is real. Confusing an ideal with what is real will have unexpected consequences. The confusion of the ideal with the real happens in love and in war, as well as with any other ideal and ideologies. Ideologies have consequences as soon as someone wishes to turn idealistic pipe dreams that are more or less-well thought out into reality.  Even just trying to get a start at  some of the things that some people wish to get into motion will cost … Continue reading

Feminism affects Fraser Institute report

Feminism officially arrived at the Fraser Institute (FI). That appears to have been a factor that caused the down-grading of Canada’s rank in the FI’s Economic Freedom of the World, 2017 Annual Report. The Fraser Institute announced: “Canada no longer among top 10 most economically free countries  (Appeared in the Winnipeg Sun, October 6, 2017)”. Gender disparity features prominently in the FI’s Economic Freedom of the World, 2017 Annual Report. Gender Disparity Index This year the index published in Economic Freedom of the World includes an adjustment for gender disparity to take into account the fact that in many nations women are not legally accorded the same level of economic … Continue reading

Notable weather events often catastrophic, 2010 years

Whenever the all-pervasive climate-alarmism hysteria gets on my nerves, I browse through the appended chronologies (especially the one by James Marusek), to learn about historical weather events, so as to get my bearings. Do a find-in-page in that for a few key items to put things into perspective: such as hailstones, Nile, Constantinople, plague, storm, drought, rain, flood, harvest, snow, frozen over, mother, etc., etc…. Weather events may be bad but their consequences can be mitigated We live in good times and, objectively, don’t have much to complain about – why the urge to return to “the good, old days”?  That the old days were good is largely a figment … Continue reading

Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming? Aliens?

The belief that there is Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming (CAGW) is far more widely spread than the one that there is extraterrestrial life.  Yet, neither belief has ever been corroborated by science, for which reason both are beliefs, not absolute knowledge. “Aliens Cause Global Warming” “My topic today sounds humorous but unfortunately I am serious. I am going to argue that extraterrestrials lie behind global warming. Or to speak more precisely, I will argue that a belief in extraterrestrials has paved the way, in a progression of steps, to a belief in global warming.” — Michael Crichton; Caltech Michelin Lecture, January 17, 2003 A search for “Fifty percent of Americans already believe … Continue reading

Rape – propaganda talking-point debunked

Updates:• 2018 09 13: To add links to related articles• 2019 03 01: To add quote and references relating to college rapes Rape – propaganda talking-point debunked • Rape statistics, ever more inventive and innovative, have long been a primary weapon in the apparently inexhaustible arsenal of feminist propagandists, but, all things must come to an end.  My mother was a treasure trove of proverbs that she used often.  One of those was, “Lügen haben kurze Beine,” literally, “Lies have short legs,” the meaning of which is that lies don’t get you very far. Index PragerU.com video on college rape Rape incidents in the U.S. — What is not the … Continue reading

The Myth of the Oppressed Japanese Women

David Thomas, in Not Guilty — In Defence of the Modern Man, dispels the myth of the oppressed Japanese Women. Not Guilty …although [British] men have marginally more influence in six out of the eleven categories, in none of them do they have the dominance enjoyed by women in their most influential areas.  The overall average works out at a marginal advantage for the female partner by 51 to 49.  It is also worth noting that the two strongest areas  for men – motor and health insurance – have to be considered in the  light of the fact that, for white-collar workers at least, both may well be  included as part of … Continue reading

Sheep People Comparisons – Are people sheeple?

Updated 2019 05 15 Sheep People Comparisons – Are people sheeple? — It was in 1997 when I first wrote this commentary.  I updated it today, but not too many changes needed to be made.  It concerns sheep people comparisons, something that many people often make.  Some do it so much that they refer to people and their  allegedly sheep-like behaviour as sheeple.  Is that fair to sheep or people?  I thought about it, and here are the results of that. Many years ago I obtained my first e-mail address.  I made it sheep_@telusplanet.net.  That address is now defunct, as eventually it became so well-known by spammers that a vast … Continue reading
