Weather is happening now. Climate is the average of weather phenomena over a a longer interval of time.

The World Meteorological Organization uses the average of weather phenomena measured over the 30-year interval from January 1, 1961 to 31 December 31, 1990 as the norm against which currently measured weather phenomena are compared to determine deviations from the norm.

Cold Winters in Edmonton and Surroundings

Update 2019 02 27: Added information by Alberta Climate Information Service (ACIS). We don’t live in Edmonton but in nearby Bruderheim, Alberta, about 50km NE from Edmonton. It generally gets to be a bit colder here than in the big city. We don’t have the benefit of a large Urban Heat Island effect. That effect is quite substantial, but even Bruderheim, a town of about 1,300 residents, has a bit of an Urban Heat Island effect, compared to surrounding ruralities. It was -31°C in town, this morning, while one of our friends stated that it was -37°C, this morning, ten miles to the NE, and another friend, living just outside … Continue reading

Weather Forecast Accuracy

Updated 2019 05 06, to add links to related articles. The weather forecast accuracy, or rather the persistent lack of it, has been bothering me for a long time. I had wanted to get an appreciation of what I had suspected and what is virtually never mentioned, namely that weather forecasts consistently miss their mark and by how much.  That is a fairly important issue, it seems. After all, forecasters cannot accurately predict what the local weather conditions will be a few days or even only one day in advance.  What hope is there that climate change for the end of the century can be predicted with a credible or … Continue reading

Climate Projections — The devil is in the details

Updated 2019 05 06, to add links to related articles. Some will say – for whatever reason – that the comparison of forecasts or climate projections vs. reality made here is not fair.  For unknown reasons, Facebook did not let me post this commentary.  When I tried, the commentary vanished into the unknown.  Perhaps that is because I used a title for it that had “devil” in it.  Maybe FB’s censorship algorithms deem it improper to use “Climate Projections” or “devil” in a FB posting.  Who knows?  It does not matter, but here is what I had tried to present. Given the discrepancies between what was forecast, temperature-wise, for 2 pm … Continue reading

Roman Warm Period : Timeline and Decline

Updated 2019 01 01: Format corrections for entries pertaining to years 558 and 559 The Roman Warm Period covered the interval from about 250 BC to about 400 AD.  It had helped to bring the Roman Empire to its apex, when the City of Rome had about one million residents.  The might, size and wealth of the Roman Empire declined when the Roman Warm Period came to an end.  The decline of the Roman Empire can be discerned in the trend of the size of the population of the City of Rome over time.(The decline or shrinking of the population of the City of Rome happened within the context of decline and … Continue reading

Little Ice Age — Climate Trend Milestone?

The Little Ice Age (LIA) received much attention by those who were affected by it.  Much was written about it, and most of that was forgotten again. Index Introduction The birth of Michel E. Mann’s Hockey-Stick Graph Debunking the Climate Hockey-Stick Graph Some of the notable weather events during the LIA A Cold Spell (2017 12 24 – 2018 01 2) and how it fits into the Scientific Climate Record Trend The Islamic Invasion and Conquest of the Roman Empire — Crime of Opportunity Related blog posting: Roman Warm Period — Timeline and Decline The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change) discussed the Medieval Warm Period (from about 950 to about 1250) and … Continue reading

Global warming? While Hell freezes over?

This is a long commentary that relates to our current cold spell and the context of the longer climate trends it is part of.  Of course, I hope that anyone reading it will enjoy doing so.  Some people insist that a long commentary should have an index.  Just in case that is important to any reader (Word Press suggest that it is), it is an afterthought and not part of the original version I posted yesterday, but here it is: Index • Introduction • Note on the Little Ice Age (added 2017 12 30) [Related commentary: Little Ice Age — Climate Trend Milestone?, added 2017 12 31] • Climate comparisons — … Continue reading

Notable weather events often catastrophic, 2010 years

Whenever the all-pervasive climate-alarmism hysteria gets on my nerves, I browse through the appended chronologies (especially the one by James Marusek), to learn about historical weather events, so as to get my bearings. Do a find-in-page in that for a few key items to put things into perspective: such as hailstones, Nile, Constantinople, plague, storm, drought, rain, flood, harvest, snow, frozen over, mother, etc., etc…. Weather events may be bad but their consequences can be mitigated We live in good times and, objectively, don’t have much to complain about – why the urge to return to “the good, old days”?  That the old days were good is largely a figment … Continue reading

Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming? Aliens?

The belief that there is Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming (CAGW) is far more widely spread than the one that there is extraterrestrial life.  Yet, neither belief has ever been corroborated by science, for which reason both are beliefs, not absolute knowledge. “Aliens Cause Global Warming” “My topic today sounds humorous but unfortunately I am serious. I am going to argue that extraterrestrials lie behind global warming. Or to speak more precisely, I will argue that a belief in extraterrestrials has paved the way, in a progression of steps, to a belief in global warming.” — Michael Crichton; Caltech Michelin Lecture, January 17, 2003 A search for “Fifty percent of Americans already believe … Continue reading

CO2 emitted at a high rate by soil

Concerned about increases in atmospheric CO2? Read this description of an interesting experiment and its fascinating result. Soil does produce a lot of CO2.  Check it out. Interestingly, the URL for the comment by Jerry Henson, August 18, 2017 at 10:20 am, that describes the experiment for measuring CO2 emitted by soil cannot be found by Facebook, but, just in case it should work for you, here is the URL for Jerry Henson’s comment: https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/08/18/nasas-secret-plan-to-save-earth-from-super-volcanoes-seriously/#comment-2584698 I have no problem with accessing Jerry Hanson’s comment via that URL.  The problem I have is that FB does not permit me to post a comment that contains the URL for either that comment … Continue reading

Trump lambasted on Paris ‘Agreement’ exit – is he wrong?

The liberal media are making an uproar over Donald Trump having announced that the U.S. will be leaving the “Paris Agreement,” the joining of which was never yet authorized by Congress. Many public figures expressed their disgust at Trump’s declaration: Elon Musk Quits Work With White House After Trump Exits Climate Accord Tesla chief says leaving Paris agreement is ‘not good for America or the world’; Disney CEO resigns from council, stated the Wall Street Journal. Good riddance! Trump bailing on the the Paris Agreement would be a middle finger to the future, claims World News.  It is, of course, a baseless claim. US leaving Paris Agreement would leave me ‘extremely … Continue reading
