Property in flood-prone areas of Alberta

Updates: 2019 03 27: Added links to related articles 2021 07 17: To update links to Flood Hazard Map Application A large number of Alberta residents who own property in flood-prone areas of Alberta are very busy trying to clean up, after the flooding in southern Alberta, flooding that affected flood-prone areas before and will affect them again.  Clean-up will take work, time and financial resources.  Many will be set back and take years to recover.  Some will not ever recover. Fortunately, the flooding did not cause much loss of life (there were three fatalities).  There may be more losses of that nature, although not directly.  Some officials already expressed … Continue reading

The exploding population of Ross Snow Geese

The exploding population of Ross Snow Geese Today’s Edmonton Journal carried a Canadian Press article (p. A10) that explains that the population of Ross’ Snow Geese has grown to such large proportions (two million) that it is denuding large areas of its habitat in the North. The article expresses hopes that the population of Ross’ Snow Geese is still small enough so that it can be brought under control by human hunters.  The species was declared overabundant in 1999, meaning that hunters are permitted to shoot them spring through fall, after it had been brought close to the verge of extinction in the 1930s. (See also http://www.ottawacitizen.com/technology/Ross+geese+stripping+North+vegetation+scientists/8568295/story.html ) The Daily … Continue reading

Southern Alberta still flooding

Updated 2019 04 19, to add links to related articles. Southern Alberta still flooding, 2013 06 22 — Today’s Edmonton Journal has extensive coverage of the flooding in Southern Alberta, and, of course, as one would expect, the politicians of all parties as well as NGOs, especially the environmentalist kind, are weighing in with their opinions on how such things are “the new norm”, a “911 call” and more.  (Photos of the Southern Alberta flooding: Calgary) They say that all of the flooding is “the new norm” and imply that the Government (that is, other taxpayers) must take care of the consequences, first and foremost prevention of re-occurrences. Well, the … Continue reading

Migration of political power from family to state

Migration of political power from the family to the state We are all familiar with Lord Acton’s statement about how “absolute power corrupts absolutely,” but it is important to consider the context in which he expressed it in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, April 1887: “I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge Pope and King unlike other men with a favourable presumption that they did no wrong. If there is any presumption, it is the other way, against the holders of power, increasing as the power increases. Historic responsibility has to make up for the want of legal responsibility. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power … Continue reading

Cuckoos in Bruderheim crowd out old lady and her son

Updated 2019 04 19, to add links to related articles. Cuckoos in Bruderheim crowd out old lady and her son Many people assert that life in a small community is more peaceful than in a large city.  I guess they base their comparisons on what they read in the papers and have nothing else for comparison. The missus and I live in a small community, while I lived and worked for much of my life in both, large cities and small communities.  We are now retired, ans we see things happen.  Word gets around in a small community. Some things are not reported in the papers at all, especially not … Continue reading

Fatherhood is dying out

Fatherhood is dying out Peter Hitchens, a journalist writing for the Daily Mail, one of the major dailies in the U.K., posted an excellent article at his blog: 16 June 2013 3:39 PM So Much for ‘Father’s Day’ – in a Country Where Fatherhood is Dying Out By the end of his or her childhood, a British boy or girl is much more likely to have a TV set in the bedroom than a father at home….(Continue reading) I posted the following comment to Peter Hitchens’ blog, this morning. As of now, a few hour later, it is still in moderation.  Is it perhaps not politically correct, or perhaps inconvenient? … Continue reading

George Rolph on Hunger Strike

Updated 2019 04 20, to add links to related articles. George Rolph on Hunger Strike Yesterday I noticed that an article, a 2010 guest post by George Rolph — on False Rape Claims, received an unusual amount of attention.  This morning, as of 9 a.m. local time (MDT – UTC-6), today’s number of visits to the article had already climbed to more than 250 and is still climbing. I wanted to find out what caused all of that attention and learned that it stems from a campaign of character assassination aimed at George Rolph, a man who became the target of domestic violence by his girlfriend, violence from which he … Continue reading

Conspiracy theories vs reality

Updated 2019 04 20, to add links to related articles. Conspiracy theories vs reality, is there a large difference between the two?  Not all conspiracy theories are bunk, or, not all programs for social engineering are conspiracies.  The powerful do not need to conspire. They just do. There is a number of things at play that prove that there is a single formula. For example, one is the program of replacing the traditional scientific method with post-modern science.  The constant search for the truth and for refining it is being replaced with a politically-correct consensus. Here is how Richard Feynman, whom some consider the greatest mind to come along since … Continue reading

Sexual Attitude Restructuring

Updated 2019 04 20, to add links to related articles. SIECUS (Sex Information & Education Council of the United States) was instrumental in launching SAR (Sexual Attitude Restructuring).  From early 1980 until Dec. 1982, 60,000 educators received re-programming by SIECUS (Sex Information & Education Council of the United States). (Note 1) Did the training then stop? What do you think? Whatever the circumstances were in that respect, those indoctrinated educators are still working on children now, aren’t they? And isn’t that the objective of the SAR program? Let’s connect a few dots That was just 60,000 educators re-programmed by one agency, SIECUS. Is SIECUS the only agency engaged in that? … Continue reading
