The Demise of the Family Wage
April 3, 2011 by Walter Schneider.
There are few people today who know what the family wage was.
Three decades before ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), President Kennedy recognized the need for an amendment to the Social Security Act. He suggested improvements to benefits—including benefits for the disabled—in February 1961. His argument was persuasive, and he succeeded in signing the amendments on June 30, 1961. At the signing, Kennedy called the changes “an additional step toward eliminating many of the hardships resulting from old age, disability or the death of the family wage-earner.”
From Call to Action — the Sixth Floor Museum — Disability Rights
http://www.jfk.org/go/exhibits/call-to-action/disability-rights
I earned a family wage supplement in Germany, before I emigrated to Canada in 1962. Prior to the early 1960s, it was in place in the USA but also in many nations in Europe, but it was one of the first issues on the agenda of the radical feminists that they had vowed to get abolished, because they claimed it was a symptom of patriarchal oppression.
In 1963 JFK had to give in to pressure by radical feminists, and family wages came to an end in the USA.
The women’s movement of the 19th Century struggled to establish not a male but a family wage. It did not favor men; it favored breadwinners. This policy derived from their primary concern that mothers should be able to devote full time to raising children and managing a home. To do that they had to be provided for, and it was the husband and father who had to do the providing, which meant that he had to earn a wage sufficient to support not only himself but his entire family.
The long enduring effort to institutionalize the family wage eventually succeeded. Robertson writes that “it has been estimated that by 1960 a family wage was paid by 65 percent of all employers in the United States and by 80 percent of the major industrial companies.” He adds, “Although feminist historians today call the family-wage ideal a “myth” designed to keep married women oppressed, few myths have come closer to becoming reality.”[4] He later states that “the family-wage economy that prevailed from 1945 to 1970 was the product of an ideal pursued deliberately, primarily by women’s organizations, through the political process….”[5]
The reversal of the traditional family order, the work of countless family women and men during the previous century, quickly accelerated. By 1963, President Kennedy had established a Women’s Commission which was stacked with career oriented women and in the same year Congress passed an Equal Pay Act, which dealt a blow to the family wage concept.
From “Recovering the American Past with Brian C. Robertson”
A review by Frank Zepezauer
http://fathersforlife.org/hist/all_the_past2.htm
It would be interesting, although that is more than I can handle by myself, to determine the exact time and date when the family wage was brought to an end in each of the developed nations. I am fairly certain that anyone discovering those dates will get a very astounding surprise.
At any rate, thanks to socialist feminism (a.k.a. radical- or Marxist-feminism), now neither men nor women nor the families they provide for get a family wage, but there is now government assistance funded by taxpayer largesse for all destitute single parents in need, the vast majority of whom are single mothers. Socialist feminism has done much to give us the welfare state, for which we are supposed to be eternally grateful.

Radiationphobia
March 15, 2011 by Walter Schneider.
Do you fear serious health problems due to being exposed to radiation from the Japanese nuclear plants?
There is little to fear. The situation in Japan is a far cry from being as harmful as other nuclear accidents were, and the dangers from those, too, were blown out of all proportions. Here is a very informative account of that:
From the Summer 2010 Issue
of 21st Century of Science and Technology
Observations on Chernobyl after 25 Years of Radiophobia
Zbigniew Jaworowski, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc.The worst possible nuclear plant accident produced no scientifically confirmed fatalities in the general population. But there was enormous political and psychological damage, mainly the result of belief in the lie that any amount of radiation is bad.
Here is another item that will do much to allay hysterics, specifically with respect to the nuclear energy plant in Fukushima, that presently and increasingly raise fears of nuclear-energy-induced radiation impacts to heights that have not been seen since the tidal wave of fear about the consequences of the Chernobyl incident was set into motion.
Why I am not worried about Japan’s nuclear reactors. | Morgsatlarge – blogorific.
There exists a copy of this post on Barry Brooks excellent blog, where you can still use the discussion function: http://bravenewclimate.com
Last but not least, see this:
MIT NSE Nuclear Information Hub
Information about the incident at the Fukushima Nuclear Plants in Japan hosted by http://web.mit.edu/nse/ :: Maintained by the students of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT
It is extremely difficult not to become influenced by the fear mongering promulgated by the media. The sad reality is that “The News” are vehicles by which to bring advertising to the people. One must make a deliberate effort to avoid becoming influenced by the media. After all, their primary purpose for existence is to influence people and thereby to make a profit. The media employ professionals schooled and trained in influencing people, all for the sake of profit.
The best news of all to accomplish that with are bad news, better yet, alarming news, and, if the news are not bad enough to achieve that with, then news that have been invented or have been made alarming when they were not and should not have been presented as alarming news in the first place will do better than all others. “Dog bites man” is not news, “Man bites dog!!” is.
Randolph Hurst was someone who had the reputation of being ruthless in inventing and presenting alarming news for boosting the circulation of his newspapers. I believe that it was he who once said: “There is no such thing as bad News,” meaning that, for the purpose of increasing circulation, the more alarming the news are, the better, because the greater the circulation numbers, the larger the advertising revenues.
Newspapers derive the vast majority of their revenues from advertising. The prices charged for copies of their newspapers pay for nothing more than just the paper they are printed on and perhaps putting them into circulation. The reporting, the editorializing, the writing, the composing, the typesetting, the wages and salaries of their staff, and all of the capital and operating expenses of newspapers are paid through advertising revenues.
Of course, very similar considerations apply to other branches of the media, such as broadcasting.
Increasing the circulation (or the size of a listening or viewing audience) increases the advertising revenues.
I believe that the recognition of that reality is one of the most important things any activists should engage themselves in.
There is an enormous media bias regarding feminism and men’s issues. I admired many of the human rights activists whom I met throughout my life for being fully aware of that.
Now get this. That bias in the media is not driven by an evil conspiracy. It is driven by greed for media profits. It just so happens that some ideological opportunists exploit the greed of the media for their own purposes.
That happens not only with respect to vilifying men and fathers for the purpose of creating and enlarging a rift between the sexes and to aid the systematic deconstruction of the traditional nuclear family. The same principle creates opportunities for other fanatical ideologists or pain alarmists such as those who wish to promote their agenda for world domination or perhaps nothing more than their greed for power and wealth by creating unfounded fears about specific environmental issues.
One little aspect of the manufacturing of fears for profit is the creation and intensification of fears regarding nuclear energy. Accidents such as those at Three-Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima are god-sends for environmental-alarmism opportunists and carpetbaggers.
__________
Note: Dr. Jaworowski’s report on radiophobia may seem at first to be difficult reading, but get into it and become fascinated.
By understanding what Dr. Jaworowski stated about radiophobia and in reading his explanation of how it was created and exploited in connection with Chernobyl you may be making the most important contribution you could ever have imagined to becoming enlightened in your career as a human rights activist.
There is no shame in being duped once…

Opinion polls have much impact but little value
February 15, 2011 by Walter Schneider.
Opinion polls not only have much impact, but they also have a great potential to do harm.
The Winnipeg Free Press carried two important stories.
The Canadian Press - ONLINE EDITION
Feb. 13, 2011
Pollster warns politicians: Think for yourself; don’t be slaves to public opinionBy: Joan Bryden, The Canadian Press
[The] blind faith in the authority of polling numbers is increasingly ill-founded as the industry struggles with a methodological crisis that is putting the accuracy of survey results into serious question.
“Anyone who’s done this long enough will tell you that public opinion need not be consistent, need not be permanent to be important or real,” [pollster Allan Gregg, chairman of Harris-Decima which provides political surveys to The Canadian Press] says.
There are more warnings and cautions about the accuracy — or rather lack of it — in Canadian polls in this story:
The Canadian Press - ONLINE EDITION
Feb. 12, 2011
Pollsters advise voters to be wary of polls ahead of possible spring voteBy: Joan Bryden, The Canadian Press
OTTAWA - Canada’s notoriously competitive pollsters have some surprisingly uniform advice about the parade of confusing and conflicting numbers they’re about to toss at voters ahead of a possible spring election: Take political horse race polls with a small boulder of salt….[Andre Turcotte, a pollster and communications professsor at Carleton University.]
“The way it’s working now is a real dog’s breakfast. It’s not working,” says Ekos Research president Frank Graves, who provides bi-weekly surveys to the CBC.
There’s broad consensus among pollsters that proliferating political polls suffer from a combination of methodological problems, commercial pressures and an unhealthy relationship with the media.
Start with the methodological morass.
“The dirty little secret of the polling business . . . is that our ability to yield results accurately from samples that reflect the total population has probably never been worse in the 30 to 35 years that the discipline has been active in Canada,” says veteran pollster Allan Gregg, chairman of Harris-Decima which provides political polling for The Canadian Press….
The article explains the meaning of “margin of error”, that it is important, that statements relating to margin of error often have no basis in fact, and that the media regard the numbers provided in polls to be more important than the truth — or the lack of it — that those numbers should represent but no longer can or do.
The media are addicted to the ‘horse race numbers” provided by opinion polls. As the first story identified above indicates, the politicians are guided by the often false numbers provided by the polls, and if you are addicted to the media, to politicians and to opinion poll results, then all is well. At least all of the players, including you, have got their story straight. The trouble with that is that the story line that every player in the game adheres to is a plot out of a bizarre reality and bear little relation to the real world.
The trouble with that is that the story line that every player in the game adheres to is a plot out of a bizarre reality and bears little relation to the real world, other than making the real world more bizarre.
All of that means that Canadian politics are being as firmly controlled and steered by a bizarre story line as, for instance, the USSR was controlled and steered by the aims of the Central Party Committee.
Whether a controlling ideology is used by a Central Party Committee and published through the media, thereby controlling and influencing the people, or whether it is being promoted by the media to influence politicians and the public who vote for them, there is little difference. The results are the same: central control through an overpowering ideology.

The Super Bowl Prostitute Myth — Debunked!
February 6, 2011 by Walter Schneider.
Dallas Observer News

The Super Bowl Prostitute Myth: 100,000 Hookers Won’t Be Showing Up in Dallas
By Pete Kotz
The alarm bells reached peak decibel in November, when Dallas Police Sergeant Louis Felini told the The Dallas Morning News that between 50,000 and 100,000 prostitutes could descend on the metroplex for the Super Bowl. The call to outrage had sounded.
His estimate was astonishing. At the higher figure, it meant that every man, woman and child holding a ticket would have their own personal hooker, from the vice presidential wing of FedEx to Little Timmy from Green Bay.
And if you believed a study commissioned by the Dallas Women’s Foundation, the hordes would include 38,000 underage prostitutes. Doe-eyed beauties from the Heartland would be peddled like Jell-O shots at the Delta Phi soiree….(Full Story)
From the article:
“This is urban legend that is pure pulp fiction,” the NFL’s McCarthy says. “I would refer you to your local law enforcement officials.”
So that’s what we did….
After you read what they found, you will never again fall for something like the Super-Bowl-Prostitute hoax.
Just in case you feel that a single compilation of evidence that is contrary to anything feminist propaganda ever wanted to indoctrinate people with in regard to sex slaves, prostitution and related horrors is not sufficient to make you change your mind and that your mind is so firmly made up on this that no facts like that will change it, then have a look at some other sources of information that bears out what the Dallas Observer found:
- Where Are All The Sex Slaves?
- Sex Trafficking - Happy Hookers of Eastern Europe
- American Men Are So Handsome

Men’s activism — Men’s power
January 9, 2011 by Walter Schneider.
A lot of mail comes my way each day. In many of my responses I recommend to read certain books. The reason why I do that is because I get the impression that those to whom I recommend those books don’t have a clue that they exist.
About ten years ago or even earlier, that was hardly ever necessary. Men’s rights activists, then, knew the authors whose books I must now point to because many of today’s activists need to be told about those books , that they need to be read and learned from.
I don’t know why that is, although we could all speculate a lot about how anyone can possibly know much about men’s rights activism without knowing the basics of what to be active about. Here (in no particular order) are links to information on some books that are essential reading for anyone who is or claims to be a men’s rights activist:
- The Myth of Male Power: Why Men Are the Disposable Sex, by Warren Farrell
You don’t like reading? Here is a link to the first part of an audio series on The Myth of Male Power - The Manipulated Man, by Esther Vilar
- The Case for Father Custody, by Daniel Amneus
- Taken into Custody: The War Against Fatherhood, Marriage, and the Family, by Stephen Baskerville
- Save the Males, By Richard Doyle
- And again. for those who don’t like to read, an excellent series of videos: Man Woman & Myth
Feel free to add to the list, but stick to the blog rules.

…good will toward men?
December 25, 2010 by Walter Schneider.
From the website of the Family of Men Support Society:
“NO MEN ALLOWED”
Misandry at the government level (City of Calgary , Province of Alberta , Government of Canada ) and at community level agencies. No Men Allowed to participate at any meetings, therefore male victims of female-perpetrated domestic violence are denied a voice.
The system is autocratic, exclusive & misandrist.
The system is not democratic, inclusive or open minded.

Slovenly Peter attracts attention
December 17, 2010 by Walter Schneider.
“There is no such thing as bad publicity.” — unknown origin
On Dec. 14, 2010, I received a complaint from Lisa McShine, who, according to what she wrote in the ensuing e-mail exchange, is an occasional proofreader for Project Gutenberg.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Project Gutenberg, abbreviated as PG, is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to “encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks.”[2] Founded in 1971 by Michael S. Hart, it is the oldest digital library.[3] Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer. As of November 2010[update], Project Gutenberg claimed over 34,000 items in its collection. Project Gutenberg is affiliated with many projects that are independent organizations which share the same ideals, and have been given permission to use the Project Gutenberg trademark. (Link to Wkipedia article on PG)
Lisa McShine complained that the web page by Fathers for Life on a mid-19th century German-language children’s book, Der Struwwelpeter, by Heinrich Hoffmann (Slovenly Peter, translated by Mark Twain) misrepresents the intentions of PG and its proofreaders. She wrote:
Hello:
Thanks so much for adding the Mark Twain translation of Der Struwwelpeter. I enjoyed reading Twain’s much more close translation from the German.
However, I want to point out that the preamble of the e-book in Project Gutenberg says the English translation dates from 1848 and it certainly dates before 1927, the published date of my physical copy of a volume of extracts for children including the Der Struwwelpeter translation and illustrations shown in the Project Gutenberg e-book. Thus, I highly doubt that the bowdlerization was intended to make the translation politically correct, as you state.
Lastly, as someone who occasionally volunteers time to proof-read for Project Gutenberg, I would like to reassure you that PG NEVER re-translates or tries to change the meaning of anything it makes available online. Our Primary Rule (http://www.pgdp.net/c/faq/proofreading_guidelines.php) is “Don’t change what the author wrote!”: we only transcribe from the image of the printed page.
I hope you will consider revising “In the translation provided by Suzanne Shell, Sandra Brown and the Online Distributed Proofreading Team of the Project Gutenberg those lines came to read as:” and “Project Gutenberg’s politically-correct translation reads:” so that it does not imply that PG and PG proofreaders had anything to do with the existing content other than to make it available in plain text form.
Kind Regards
LM
Depending on what I will eventually find out about what caused the enormous increase in traffic to the web page by Fathers for Life on Der Struwwelpeter, concurrently with or subsequently to Lisa McShine’s complaint, I may at some time publish all of the e-mail exchange between us. Nevertheless, it was not on account of anything I had done. My responses to Lisa McShine were sent only to her, and until today I had not done anything to make anyone aware of the discussion. Regardless, my closing remarks in my second message to Lisa McShine (Dec. 15, 2010) proved to be prophetic, at least in part, the one pertaining to publicity.
Nevertheless, not all is lost. An often-used maxim by an unknown individual states: “There is no such thing as bad publicity.” That principle brought fame, power and fortune to many people. Let’s hope that the discussion of the book at Fathers for Life will help to encourage improvements to the good work by Project Gutenberg and that thereby the quality of that work will become even better.
It remains to be seen whether the remaining part, about the good impact that publicity may have, will come true.
The increase in the number of daily visits to the web page is remarkable. After having been read for years by from four to 21 visitors a day (each remaining on the page on average for a little over eight minutes), the number of daily visits increased to 95 (Dec. 13), then to 1,110 (Dec. 14, the day Lisa McShine sent her complaint), after which it fell off to 556 (Dec. 15), and to 310 (Dec. 16), with the average time each visitor remained at the page still being a little more than eight minutes — enough time for most to have read all of the page.

A screen shot showing the daily number of visits at http://fathersforlife.org/hist/der_struwwelpeter.htm, for the 30 days ending Dec. 16, 2010 (thanks to Google Analytics)
The conclusion is inevitable, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Turkey: Violence against women
December 13, 2010 by Walter Schneider.
Bianet: News in English

All of that seems to be terrible. Without a doubt, Burçin BELGE did a good job of raising concern for women, but did she report the truth, all of the truth and nothing but the truth, or did she engage in promoting feminist propaganda?
The issues reported in the article should of course be of concern with respect to violence against women.
However, the one-sided reporting in the article should be of far greater concern. What purpose is being served by reporting only fatal violence against women? Men and boys comprise almost one half of Turkey’s population. Does it not deserve concern that far greater numbers of men than women are being killed through violent actions?

According to the CIA World Fact Book, Turkey has an estimated population of 77,804,122 (July 2010 est.) 79 times 4.971 works out to about 392 murders per year.
According to the article in bianet, 199 women were killed by men in 2010. It is not clear from either the article in bianet or from other statistics I could find whether all of those women killed fall into the category of manslaughter or murder, but some figures I found indicate that Turkey has 2,175 manslaughters a year.
The total number of homicides of men and women in Turkey is therefore most likely in the order of about 2,560. Of those homicides, 199, one out of every 13 homicides, were women killed by men. That leaves the conclusion that 12 times as many victims of homicides were children and men killed by women and men. I wonder how many of those other 92.2 percent of homicides in Turkey were committed by women, if we really need to know that? After all, the victims of those homicides are dead one way or another.
Given that Burçin BELGE is much closer to reliable sources of information on that than anyone here at the opposite side of the globe is, I sent her a link of this blog posting. Maybe that will encourage her to do a little better and do some investigating instead of just sloppy journalism and engaging in feminist advocacy — all for the sake of truth, objectivity and justice for all victims of violence.
Perhaps there is some confusion about the differences between homicide, manslaughter and murder in Turkey, but Burçin BELGE can set things straight and explain why there appears to be so much confusion in the “official” statistics and why those statistics available on the Internet do not put her journalistic skills and efforts into the best light.
After all, when all is said and done, the murderers of men, and perhaps of children, too, are from all ages and social groups.

Of ‘weeping’ Madonnas
December 2, 2010 by Walter Schneider.
Edmonton Journal
Dec. 2, 2010, page A8
Busloads drawn to ‘weeping’ Madonna
Windsor’s famous “weeping” Virgin Mary statue may be safely ensconced in a local church, but its hordes of faithful admirers are showing few signs of abating.
______________
Re-incarnations, weeping virgins, it’s all the same…
The Journal article does not explain why the Windsor Madonna sheds oily, healing tears. There could be a number of reasons that make a virgin weep, but this is not the place to explore any of them.
The Internet provides access to a number of explanations for the Windsor ‘weeping’ Madonna. You take your pick. They are like cars. All are good when put into motion the first time.
Here is a story about Madonnas and tears of olive oil. Would that be virgin oil?
Virgins cry tears of common olive oil
Debunkers uncover holy hucksters who prey on faithful with a host of scams and tricks
Yet stories of miraculous bleeding and weeping Virgin Mary statues continue, and the faithful continue to flock to them.
“I suspect that in many of those cases, the same thing happens as is happening in Windsor,” said James Olson, a professor of psychology at the University of Western Ontario….
Does it really take a psychology professor to provide an explanation that has been around for as long as there have been hucksters? That leaves a word of advice to those who love to buy into stories about re-incarnations and weeping Madonnas: “There’s a sucker born every minute, but that’s no reason to be a reborn sucker.” (That piece of good advice comes from a usually reliable source, Snopes.)

My response:
Stephen,
I know that Dads & Things is not entirely unbiased in its reporting of child abuse cases, but that is mainly because I focus on reporting things not covered in the main-stream media and look at things a bit beyond the scope of the Google Reader feed you pointed me to.
Description: RELIGIOUS FANATICS ARE AMONG THE MOST VICIOIUS CHILD ABUSERS IN THE WORLD
Subscribers: 54
Posts per week: 77.2
Going by those numbers, I figure that we look at a total of 3,754 reports annually of child abuse by Christians in the world. That number would be only a small fraction of the annual number of child abuse cases in the world. I never have seen exact numbers of such cases, but let’s do a few back-of-the-envelope calculations.
First of all, let’s assume the worst, that all of the cases reported at the recommended Google Reader feed are cases of fatal child abuse.
The total number of child murders (not including abortions, of whom there are about 1.1. million a year) in the U.S. in 2009 was 923 (based on the FBI Uniform Crime Report). That number is probably too low, as women routinely get off with murder and many cases of child murder are being diagnosed as being due to accidental or natural causes, but I’ll let that go for now.
From that, and given that the U.S. population is about 5 percent of the world population, the total number of child murders every year must then be in the order of 18,460 in the world.
Going by that, Christians would perpetrate about 20 percent of all child murders each year, while the remaining population sector (all non-Christians) would perpetrate the remaining 80 percent of child murders.
You may wonder why I discuss fatal child abuse by Christians, when the Google Reader feed you pointed out identifies in its title “RELIGIOUS FANATICS”. Well, I looked through the first 20 or so headings of the postings the feed identifies and assume that the pattern shown there holds true for the rest. All of the “RELIGIOUS FANATICS” identified in those first few postings are Christians.
Now, there are about 2.1 billion Christians in the world, out of a total of 6.8 billion people. That would be about 31 percent of the world population (which means that the Google Reader feed you recommend is enormously biased). That Christian portion of the world population fatally abuses at most 20 percent of all children who are being fatally abused each year. Going by that, I fail to see the truth in the premise of the Google Reader feed you recommended, namely that Christians are the most vicious child abusers in the world. It seems to me that there is only a very small chance of that being true, while, collectively, all other religious denominations are — going by those numbers — substantially more vicious.
The truth is quite possibly that some non-Christian denominations are a lot more vicious than Christian religious fanatics are alleged to be.
I think that I better stick to debunking the wrongfully alleged peacefulness of women rather than to deviate into largely uncharted territory about which there is very little reliable information. I would no sooner want to go there than I am willing to promote returning to the allegations that Jews habitually engage in the ritual slayings of babies on Easter. We have had enough pogroms against the Jews and don’t need any against the Christians, there having been more than enough of those sort of persecutions.
Our Thanksgiving Day was on the 11th of October, but we celebrate Veterans Day (our Remembrance Day), Christmas and Easter, of course, on identical days of the calendar.

F4L: Let’s not blame religious fanaticism for it, but, yes, there always is an excuse when a woman kills a child. If it was not her husband or any other man who made her do it, then the next in line are the devil or her inner demons. If everything else fails, the poor murdering mama can always claim nothing more than that she just could not help herself and just had to do it.
For that reason a special crime category, Infanticide, was created that is accessible only for women who kill children.
For men there is never an excuse. Men are always considered as being fully responsible for their actions, while women are thought to be so fragile that they must always be treated by the courts as being at least somewhat infantile.
