RIVERSIDE, Calif. (CNS) — A mother of four who fatally shot her husband in what she has repeatedly described as an accident was sentenced Friday to 40 years to life in prison.
Sonja Regina Hadnot, 39, was convicted in June of second-degree murder and a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a firearm in a crime resulting in great bodily injury or death for the June 28, 2000, death of her husband, David.
Judge J. Richard Couzens sentenced her to 15 years to life for the murder charge and 25 years to life for the gun allegation, according to Hadnot’s attorney, Danny Davis.
Immediately after the sentence was handed down, Hadnot’s eldest daughter, 22-year-old Cleshae, “became hysterical,” said Riverside County Deputy District Attorney Michelle Paradise.
….Hadnot’s first trial ended in a hung jury. A second ended in a mistrial over alleged juror misconduct. A jury in the third trial convicted Hadnot of second-degree murder. She appealed and earlier this year a state Court of Appeals reversed the conviction. That’s because the judge tossed out testimony from a psychologist who said Hadnot likely experienced post-traumatic stress disorder at the time of the killing….
It was not possible to find any more information other than that Sonya Regina Hadnot appears to reside in a women’s facility. It appears reasonable to assume that she has not been able to convince anyone that her deceased husband was guilty of his murder, and that, because he died of it, she should be released.
